Have you ever read a book and highlighted every sentence?

I had this experience in March when I read Christina Crook's "The Joy of Missing Out," which is a celebration of what can be possible when we find tech-life balance. Seriously, it's a must-read.

As I read, I thought, "this person is my digital mindfulness soulmate! And her name is also Christina!" But I felt kind of intimidated. I mean, she wrote this fantastic book, and I am always in awe of people who have the creative chops and discipline to write a book. But I took a chance and wrote her a letter (snail mail just for fun) about how much I loved her work and proposed that we consider collaborating. I am thrilled to announce that we're joining forces!

Join us for one of our upcoming JOMO + Digital Mindfulness Retreats, a series of events designed to help digitally weary attendees learn how to have a healthier relationship with technology, nurture themselves through rest and meditation, and break free from compulsive digital overuse. Christina Crook
Founder, JOMO®

Christina Crook is an award-winning author and in-demand speaker with engagements including the Young Presidents’ Organization, World Vision and the All Tech is Human Summit. Her 2015 book, The Joy of Missing Out: Finding Balance in a Wired World, helped pioneer the field of digital well-being and established her as a leading voice on technology and human flourishing. Her commentary on technology and daily life has appeared in international media, including The New York Times, Psychology Today and Glamor Brasil. She is widely considered the leader of the global #JOMO movement and is a founding member of the Digital Wellness Collective. Christina co-leads JOMO + Digital Wellness Retreats, a series of events designed to help digitally weary attendees learn to have a healthier relationship with technology.

As a Seattle-based psychotherapist, Christina has had a front-row seat to the emotional impact smartphones and social media have had on her clients, notably increased loneliness, anxiety, and alienation. Where weak social ties are plentiful, stronger ties grow harder to create and maintain. In 2017, inspired by the work of Sherry Turkle, Nicholas Carr and her own transformative experience with digital fasting, Christina launched Digital Mindfulness Retreats which emphasize meditation, present-moment experience, social connection, and self-reflection. A community organizer turned Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Christina brings over 25 years of experience with change-making, group facilitation, mindfulness training, and workshop development. She loves creating nurturing experiences for individuals and teams. JOMO and Digital Mindfulness Retreats® Announce Collaboration for New Events

( Toronto + Seattle, June 19, 2019 ) — Two popular digital wellness experts are combining forces to help others break free from the digital albatross of screens and in the process, find a joy-centered life.

Filling the gap that popular digital detox camp, Camp Grounded, left in the market, JOMO founder and author Christina Crook and Digital Mindfulness Retreats® founder Christina Malecka, both members of the newly formed Digital Wellness Collective, have formed a strategic collaboration to bring digital wellness retreats to bleary-eyed, busy people who crave inspired living more than push notifications and pixels.

Crook and Malecka are bringing their respective brands together to create JOMO + Digital Mindfulness Retreats, a series of events designed to help digitally weary attendees learn to have a healthier relationship with technology, nurture themselves through deep meditation, break free from compulsive digital use, and set intentions to prioritize joy and satisfaction.

“When I read Christina Crook’s book The Joy of Missing Out: Finding Balance In A Wired World, I underlined almost every word, saying aloud to myself, ‘Yes! Yes! Yes!’” Malecka said. At that point, I was pretty sure that Christina was my digital mindfulness soul mate. Her passion for supporting people to be more present in their lives and relationships inspired me to write her a letter (snail mail, naturally) proposing we work together, and the rest is history."

Their first retreat is scheduled for August 10 at Werklab in Vancouver.

“Unplugging from technology is an opportunity for individuals to rest, restore, and reconnect to themselves and the natural world,” Crook said. "I couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Digital Mindfulness Retreats to offer ongoing opportunities for individuals, couples and teams to experience the joy of missing out.”

While smart devices promise to make our lives easier, their time-saving solutions come at a cost: our attention. Through these new retreats, Crook and Malecka will help attendees learn to reclaim time and attention so they can thrive in a wired world.

"All of us need a moment to step back, take a breath and re-center our relationships with ourselves and other humans. Cost for the August 10 retreat is $199 before if registered before July 1 and $249 after.

In addition to the inaugural JOMO + Digital Mindfulness Retreats collaboration in Vancouver, the new partners will also host a four-day retreat at Hollyhock on Cortes Island, BC from October 17-20, and a seven-day retreat at Present Moment Retreat Center in Troncones, Mexico from March 28-April 4, 2020.
